Class B at a glance
- Motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg permissible total mass
- At most 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat
- Trailer up to 750 kg, or heavier if combination ≤ 3,500 kg
- Minimum age 18 – with accompanied driving from 17
- Included: classes AM and L
- Requirements: eye test, first‑aid course, training, two exams
- Card licence: document valid 15 years, then renew it
Accompanied driving from 17 (BF17)
At 17 you may drive if an accompanying person named on your certificate is with you: at least 30 years old, holding class B for at least 5 years, at most 1 point in Flensburg, not under the influence of alcohol (0.5 ‰ or more) or drugs. They only advise – you are responsible. Driving alone leads to your licence being revoked. From 18, no accompaniment is needed.
The probation period
- Duration: 2 years from your first licence
- A offence (serious): e.g. red light, 21 km/h too fast, alcohol, phone
- B offence (less serious): e.g. worn tyres
- 1 A or 2 B offences: remedial course, probation extended to 4 years
- Next offence: warning, traffic psychology counselling recommended
- Another offence: the licence is revoked

Registration, insurance, MOT
Every car needs registration and number plates plus third‑party liability insurance – it pays for damage you cause to others. Partial and comprehensive cover are optional. A new car must have its first general inspection (HU) after 3 years, then every 2 years. The rear sticker shows the month at the top and the year in the centre.
No licence or insurance? A crime!
Driving without a licence, during a driving ban or without liability insurance is a criminal offence. The vehicle owner is also liable if they allow it. Consequences: fine or prison, a ban on getting a licence – and often huge damage claims.
