Basic manoeuvres at a glance

Which tasks you get – and how they are assessed

text

Three tasks – one of them always

In the class B exam you perform three basic manoeuvres. The examiner picks one from group 1 and one from group 2 – plus the emergency stop, which is always included. They are tested wherever the route allows: quiet residential streets, car parks or junctions. So practise every variant equally well.

compare

The two selection groups

Group 1 (one of them)

  • Reversing around a corner to the right
  • Reverse parallel parking

Group 2 (one of them)

  • Bay parking – forwards or in reverse
  • Angled parking – forwards or in reverse
  • Turning around (Umkehren)
facts

The rules of the game

  • Each basic manoeuvre may be repeated once
  • When parking, at most 2 corrections
  • Parallel parked: no more than 30 cm from the curb
  • Don't mount the curb, don't touch other vehicles
  • All-round check before and during every movement
  • Observation counts more than speed
  • Emergency stop: part of every exam
tip

Slow wins

Perform manoeuvres at walking pace – slip the clutch, or with an automatic control speed with the brake only. The slower the car, the more time to steer and look. If a pedestrian or cyclist comes along: stop. The examiner sees that as positive, not as a mistake.
