Special drives & exam route

Country roads, motorway, night and route classics

facts

The special drives (45 minutes each)

  • Country roads: 5 × – bends, overtaking, wildlife crossing
  • Motorway: 4 × – merging, high speed, distance
  • Night: 3 × – lights, dazzle, being seen
  • Required before the exam, certified by your instructor
  • Exam route: in town, out of town, usually motorway or expressway
  • Out of town, overtake cyclists with at least 2 m distance
  • The 2027 reform plans fewer mandatory special drives
compare

Motorway: joining and leaving

Joining

  • Use the full acceleration lane, reach traffic speed briskly
  • Mirror, indicate left, shoulder check
  • Motorway traffic has priority
  • Pick a gap, merge, indicator off

Leaving

  • Marker posts show 300, 200, 100 m to the exit
  • Indicate right in good time
  • Move onto the exit lane early, brake only there
  • Check the speedometer – speed perception deceives
simulator

Onto the motorway

Accelerate, find a gap, merge – and later exit cleanly via the deceleration lane.

simulator

Changing lanes

On multi-lane roads, always: mirror – signal – shoulder check. Never cross solid lines.

facts

Roundabout (sign 215 with 205)

  • No indicator when entering
  • Traffic in the roundabout has priority
  • Indicate right before your exit
  • When leaving, watch for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Don't stop in the roundabout – except to avoid danger
  • Don't drive over the central island in a car
simulator

Master the roundabout

Enter without indicating, respect priority and indicate right in good time – also on two-lane roundabouts.

facts

Level crossing

  • St Andrew's cross: rail vehicles have priority
  • Marker boards announce the crossing: three, two, one stripe
  • From the warning sign to the crossing, don't overtake motor vehicles
  • Approach at moderate speed
  • Red light or lowering barrier: wait before the St Andrew's cross
  • Only enter if you can clear the crossing quickly
  • Switch off the engine when waiting longer
simulator

Cross the railway safely

Recognise the St Andrew's cross and marker boards, wait in the right place and switch off the engine.

facts

Zebra crossing and bus stop

  • Let pedestrians cross at the zebra crossing
  • Approach at moderate speed, no overtaking
  • Bus approaching with hazard lights: no overtaking
  • Bus stopped with hazard lights: walking speed only, oncoming traffic too
  • Bus without hazard lights: pass carefully, stop if necessary
  • Let scheduled buses pull out from stops
simulator

Pedestrians and buses

Spot pedestrians wanting to cross early and pass the bus with hazard lights at walking speed only.

simulator

Night drive

Use dipped and main beam correctly, avoid dazzling and spot pedestrians in dark clothing in time.

check

How do you indicate correctly at a roundabout (sign 215 with 205)?

  1. Indicate left when entering.
  2. Indicate right before exiting.
  3. Don't indicate when entering.
